Malheureusement, lors de deux séjours dans le Périgord, je suis passé à chaque fois devant cette petite ville. Très historique et unique. Ça vaut vraiment le détour.
Célèbre pierre de dédicace de 1194, Célestin Pape, Philippe roi des francs, Richard roi d'Angleterre et duc d'Aquitaine, Hélie Taleyrand comte du Périgord.
Tout simplement fantastique, cette petite église est un joyau parmi les sites touristiques - un must absolu si vous êtes intéressé par le pays, les gens, l'histoire et l'architecture.
Très belle église, ouverte au public en sus.
Interesting little Romanesque church of Saint-Martin de Limeuil, or large chapel, was consecrated in 1194, originally parish church of Limeuil, later used by the river-fairing community. It had multiple dedications, including the martyr of Canterbury. The (Latin) dedications are inscribed in stone on the left wall on entering. The translation in french reads something like: l'an de l'incarnation du seigneur mille cent QUATRE-VINGT-QUATORZE, INDICTION DOUZIEME, CONCURRENT CINQUIEME, ÉPACTE XXVI, LE TROISIÈME DES CALENDES DE FÉVRIER, JOUR DU SEIGNEUR, LUNE QUATRIÈME A ÉTÉ DÉDIÉE CETTE ÉGLISE ET L'AUTEL PAR LE SEIGNEUR ADÉMAR ÉVÊQUE DE PÉRIGUEUX, EN L'HONNEUR DE LA SAINTE TRINITÉ, ET DE SAINTE MARIE VIERGE, ET DU BIENHEUREUX MARTIN ÉVÊQUE ET CONFESSEUR, ET DU BIENHEUREUX PA(UL a)pÔTRE, ET DU BIENHEUREUX THOMAS ARCHEVÊQUE ET MARTYR, ET DE SAINTE CATHERINE VIERGE ET MARTYRE, ET DE TOUS LES SAINTS DE DIEU : HÉBRARD DE VILARS ÉTANT DIACRE DE CETTE ÉGLISE, CÉLESTIN PAPE PRÉSIDANT À LA SAINTE ÉGLISE ROMAINE, PHILIPPE ROI DES FRANÇAIS EXERÇANT LE POUVOIR, RICHARD ROI D'ANGLETERRE TENANT LE DUCHÉ D'AQUITAINE, HÉLIE DE TALAIRAND [ÉTANT] DE PÉRIGORD COMTE, HÉLIE OCCUPANT LE SIÈGE MÉTROPOLITAIN DE BORDEAUX The mention of Saint Thomas martyr could be ‘just a dedicatory note among others, at a time when the patronage of the martyr archbishop was particularly in popular in the Aquitaine’, ‘an expiatory act of Richard on behalf of his father (Henry II) for his role in the death of Saint Thomas’, or ‘a swipe of the son at his father’. The inscription must have been ordered by Hébrard de Villars, deacon of this church, whose tombstone was later inserted in the right pilaster of the portal. The dedication was inscribed between 1194 and 1230, more or less contemporaneous with the consecration. Might have been a transcript of the original parchment charter or scroll, which would have been laid below the altar on the day of the consecration. The parchment has not survived.
Un joyau . Une chapelle du 12eme siècle sans chichi qui a miraculeusement traversé des siècles de déchirements humains . Y compris pour des peintures murales . Elle reste d'autant plus émouvante que le cimetière du village de Limeuil est toujours autour d'elle. Entrée libre de 9 h à 18 h.
